How to Add Reviews and Testimonials to Shopify Product Pages
A step-by-step guide to adding reviews and testimonials to Shopify product pages: where they belong, which widget layout fits each spot, and how to embed it with a Custom Liquid block.
Shoppers look for reviews on the product page, right before they decide. If your Shopify product pages show nothing, or a single star rating with no detail, you are asking new customers to trust you on your word alone.
This guide shows how to add reviews and testimonials to Shopify product pages with a widget you paste into your theme. No developer and no heavy app needed. It covers where reviews belong on the page, which layout fits each spot, the exact steps in the Shopify theme editor, how to show different reviews on different products, and what to check on a phone. If you are still collecting reviews, start with our holiday playbook for post-purchase review requests.
Where reviews belong on a Shopify product page
Reviews work best in two places: a short rating near the buy button, and the full reviews further down the page. Shoppers use them for different jobs. The rating is a quick trust check at the moment of decision. The full reviews answer specific questions about fit, quality and delivery.
Shoppers do read them. In Baymard Institute’s usability testing of ecommerce product pages, 95% of users relied on reviews to learn more about products (Baymard Institute, “User Ratings Distribution Summary” (opens in a new tab), first published 2017, updated with new data in 2025).
| Spot on the page | Layout | Why it works there |
|---|---|---|
| Next to the price or add to cart button | Rating Badge | A compact score that does not push the buy button down |
| Below the product description | Review Grid | Every review gets equal space, so shoppers can scan for details |
| Below the description, for video reviews | Video Carousel | A swipeable row of clips that works well on phones |
| Near the top, for one standout review | Quote Spotlight | A single pull quote that answers the main objection |

Step 1: Get your reviews into one place
Before you can show reviews, you need them in your StoryProof library. There are four ways to bring them in, and you can use all of them at once.
- Collect new ones. Send customers your collection link by email or text, or print its QR code on an insert card. They leave a video or text review in their browser, with no app and no account.
- Import from review platforms. Connect Shopify store ratings, Google, Trustpilot, Amazon and others. On Starter and above, a connected platform keeps syncing new reviews on its own. Our guide to embedding Google reviews on your website walks through a connection step by step.
- Upload a CSV. If your current review app can export reviews, map the columns and upload them in one go.
- Paste reviews in by hand. Useful for a kind email or a message from a customer, with their permission.
Nothing goes public until you approve it. Approve the honest critical reviews as well as the glowing ones. A page full of perfect scores looks less believable, not more.
Step 2: Label reviews by product
Labels let one library feed many product pages. Give each review a label for the product it is about, such as “wool-sweater” or “travel-mug”. You can label reviews one at a time or select many and label them in bulk.
If you sell only a handful of products, or your reviews are about the store in general, you can skip this step and show the same reviews on every product page.
Step 3: Build the widget and copy the snippet
- 1In StoryProof, open Widgets and create a new widget.
- 2Choose a layout: Rating Badge for beside the buy button, or Review Grid for below the description.
- 3Choose which reviews it shows: all approved reviews, or only those with one product’s label.
- 4Match the look to your store: theme, accent and star colours, card style and font.
- 5Set the mobile layout. Widgets have a separate mobile setting, so a grid can become a carousel on phones.
- 6Copy the one-line embed snippet.
The snippet loads asynchronously, so it does not hold up the rest of your product page while it loads.
Step 4: Add the widget to your Shopify product template
Shopify’s current themes let you add custom Liquid to a page template in the theme editor (Shopify Help Center, “Customizing sections” (opens in a new tab)), and a Custom Liquid block or section accepts the widget snippet as it is. Labels can differ slightly between themes.
- 1In your Shopify admin, go to Online Store, find your theme and click Edit theme.
- 2Click the page drop-down at the top of the editor (it starts on Home page), then choose Products and Default product.
- 3For a rating near the buy button: in the Product information section, click Add block, choose Custom Liquid, paste your Rating Badge snippet, and drag the block to just above or below the buy buttons.
- 4For the full reviews: click Add section below the product information, choose Custom Liquid, and paste your Review Grid snippet.
- 5Check the preview, then click Save.
Your widget now appears on every product that uses the default product template. If your theme has no Custom Liquid option, it may be an older, vintage theme. In that case, ask your theme developer to add the snippet to the product template, and duplicate your theme before anyone edits its code.
Step 5: Show different reviews on different products
To give each product its own reviews, pair a labelled widget with an alternate product template. This keeps a review of your sweater off the page for your mug.
- 1In StoryProof, make one widget per product label, as in Step 3.
- 2In the Shopify theme editor, click the page drop-down, choose Products, then Create template. Base it on Default product and name it after the product.
- 3Replace the snippets in that template’s Custom Liquid block and section with that product’s widgets, and save.
- 4In your Shopify admin, go to Products, open the product, choose the new template under Theme template, and click Save.
Shopify documents both steps in its help center (Shopify Help Center, “Templates” (opens in a new tab)). Only templates in your live theme can be assigned, so publish the theme you edited.
Each product with its own reviews uses its own widgets, so check your plan’s widget limit before you start: Starter includes 5 widgets, and Pro and Agency have no limit. If you have many products, start with your best sellers and the ones you will promote hardest, and show store-wide reviews on the rest.
Step 6: Check it on a phone
Most of your shoppers will see the product page on a phone. Adobe expects 57.4% of US online spend in the 2026 holiday season to come from mobile devices (Adobe forecast via Business Wire (opens in a new tab), 28 September 2026).
- Switch the theme editor to its mobile preview and scroll the whole product page.
- Make sure the rating does not push the add to cart button below the first screen.
- Open the live page on your own phone and check that the reviews load and nothing scrolls sideways.
Troubleshooting
- The widget does not appear. Check that you saved in the theme editor, that you edited your live theme, and that the product uses the template you edited.
- The widget is empty. Make sure the reviews are approved and carry the label the widget filters by.
- Reviews show up twice. The snippet is probably pasted in both a block and a section. Remove one.
- The wrong reviews show on a product. Check the product’s theme template in your Shopify admin and the label filter on the widget.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Shopify app to show reviews on product pages?
No. Most current Shopify themes include a Custom Liquid block or section in the theme editor. You paste a review widget snippet there, with no app install and no code editing.
Will a review widget slow down my Shopify store?
A widget that loads asynchronously does not block the rest of the page from loading. Check your product page with PageSpeed Insights before and after you add it to be sure.
Can I show Google or Trustpilot reviews on Shopify product pages?
Yes. Import them into a testimonial tool alongside your other reviews, approve the ones you want, and show them in the same widget on your product page.
Put your reviews where shoppers decide
Your product page is where a shopper decides to buy or leave. Put a rating by the button, the full reviews below the description, and check it on a phone.
