Get unboxing and first-use videos from real customers

A phone video of a customer opening your box answers questions product photos cannot: how big it really is, how it is packed, what it feels like to use. Write the request, the packing-slip card and the filming tips below.

  • A request email timed to delivery
  • Text for a card with a QR code in the box
  • Filming tips you can send customers

The problem, solved

Why unboxing videos rarely arrive, and how StoryProof gets them in

Situation 1 of 5

By the time I think to ask, the box is recycled

The first-impression moment lasts a day or two. A request that arrives a month later gets a written line at best.

How StoryProof solves it

On plans with automations, your store’s order webhook triggers a review request a week later, with nobody needing to remember.

Subject: Has your [product name] arrived, [first name]?

    Hi [first name],

Your [product name] should be with you by now. If you have a minute when you first use it, we would love a short video of you opening it or trying it out.

No editing, no script. Hold your phone upright and tell us what you think. Here is the link: [collection link]

If filming is not your thing, the same link takes a voice note or a couple of written lines.

    Thank you,

Collect the videos with StoryProof

  1. 1

    Create a video-first collection form

Add the prompts above. Customers record in the browser on their phone, or switch to an audio note or text. Longest video a customer can record: Free 2 min, Starter 5 min, Pro 8 min.

  2. 2

    Send the request after delivery

From Pro, your store sends a webhook when an order is placed and the request goes out a week later. On other plans, send the email above by hand.

  3. 3

Put the QR code in the box

Print the code from your collection link on the card, so customers can film the moment they open it.

  4. 4

Approve and place the best on product pages

Every video waits for your approval. Add the ones that show the product clearly to the widget on that product’s page.

What happens next: Match videos to products as you approve them, so each product page shows a customer opening that exact item.

Before you start

Before you ask

  • Requests go by email

StoryProof sends requests by email only. The card in the box covers customers who ignore email.

  • Delivery times vary

The automated request goes a week after the order. If your shipping is slower, send it by hand after delivery instead.

  • Free products need disclosing

If you send free products in return for videos, say so next to each video. Viewers would want to know.

  • Check every frame before approving

Customers film at home, so a label with their address, a family photo or a child can slip into the background. Watch each video to the end and reject or ask for a retake if anything private shows.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Short answers to what usually comes up next.

Do customers need an app to record an unboxing video?

No. The collection link opens in the phone’s browser and records from there.

How long should an unboxing video be?

Under a minute is plenty for a product page. Longer videos rarely get watched to the end.

Can I use customer unboxing videos in ads?

Only if the customer agreed to that use. Ask about ads explicitly in your request if you plan to run them.

What if the video shows a damaged or wrong item?

Treat it as a support case first: contact the customer and put it right. Do not approve it for a product page, and do not ask them to film again until the problem is solved.
