New name, old quotes

Updating Testimonials After a Company Rebrand

The logo changed overnight. The praise on your site still thanks a company that no longer exists by that name. Work through each quote that mentions the old brand, decide whether it can stay, be reconfirmed or be retired, and ask the customer before a single word of theirs is changed.

  • Find every quote that names the old brand
  • Ask before swapping a name inside a customer quote
  • Collect fresh praise under the new name

The problem, solved

What a rebrand does to the praise you already have

None of these quotes became untrue. They just name something your visitors can no longer find.

Situation 1 of 5

Half our quotes thank the old name

A visitor who has never heard the old name reads a quote about a different company and wonders whether it was copied from somewhere.

How StoryProof solves it

Tag each quote that names the old brand so they sit together in one filtered list, and work through that list instead of hunting page by page.

Rebrand checklist

Sort every quote that names the old brand

Tick each item as you go. Work through it once for the whole collection, not per quote.

What to do with each kind of quote

Match the quote to a row. When in doubt, ask the customer: it costs one email.

A bracketed note sits outside the quotation marks. Text inside them stays the customer’s own.

In StoryProof

Run the rebrand cleanup in StoryProof

  1. 1

Tag every quote that names the old brand

One tag for the whole set, so the cleanup has a single list and a clear finish line.

  2. 2

Pull the unconfirmed ones off main pages

Choose which approved testimonials each widget shows, and keep the old name quotes off the homepage and pricing page for now.

  3. 3

    Email customers the new wording

Ask each customer to approve the change, or to record a fresh testimonial through your link in video, audio or text.

  4. 4

    Approve the new versions

Each new or reworded testimonial waits for your approval before it appears anywhere.

  5. 5

Rebuild quote images with the new logo

From Pro, the social image designer turns an approved testimonial into a branded image, so old graphics can be replaced in one sitting.

What happens next: Keep the "old brand" tag on retired quotes rather than deleting them. If anyone later asks what a customer originally said, the record is still there.

Before you start

What a rebrand cleanup cannot do

  • No silent name swaps

Changing the brand inside a quote without the customer’s yes puts words in their mouth. Ask, or add a note outside the quote.

  • Spoken names stay spoken

StoryProof does not edit what someone says in a video. A new recording or a visible note are the honest options.

  • Third party reviews are not yours to update

Reviews on other sites keep the old name until the reviewer edits them. This cleanup covers the testimonials you publish.

  • Some quotes will be lost

Customers who have moved on may never reply. Retiring a few strong quotes is the price of not misquoting anyone.

FAQ

Questions people ask

Short answers to what usually comes up next.

Is a bracketed note like "[now NewName]" enough?

It is honest, because it sits outside the customer’s words and tells the reader what changed. It still reads awkwardly, so treat it as a stopgap while you ask for a reconfirmed or fresh quote.

Should I remove every old testimonial when we rebrand?

No. A quote that praises your team or the result without naming the brand is still accurate. Only the ones that name the old company or product need attention.

What if the product itself changed, not just the name?

Then the question is whether the quote still describes what you sell. If it praises a feature you removed, retire it regardless of the name.

How do I word the email asking a customer to approve the new name?

Show them their original quote and the proposed version side by side, explain the rename in one line, and make "no change, please remove it" an easy answer too.

Do customers mind being asked?

Most do not, and some will offer a new quote unprompted. A rename is also a natural reason to get back in touch with customers you have not spoken to in a while.
